Guide to the right use of PEHD tanks and drums
How to chose a Bergamaschi Plastica tank or drums
Bergamaschi Plastica can advise and orient the customer in choosing the best package according to the storage conditions, movement and transport. The compatibility between
HDPE package and your product must be verified. It is import to analyse the compatibility between the content, caps and their seals, too.
Product density and conditions of movement determine the maximum stacking weight. When the density is more than 1.3 g/ml, you have to be careful in defining stacking height.
Empty tank or drum storage
Keep away from fire, sparks and heat sources such as hot tanks and radiators.
Keep in clean and uncontaminated storage.
Avoid open air storage and long sun light exposure as UV rays can deteriorate polyethylene molecular structure, making the container fragile.
Coloured containers (black, blue, etc.) offer a better protection thanks to pigments.
Tanks and drums filling
Avoid damaging or wet tank closing neck with filling tube.
To close screw down the caps as indicated on technical sheets (Nw/m values).
Do not reuse air valves.
Fill the container up to 98% of its capacity, to reduce air space to the minimum: this avoids that variations in air volume (and therefore in internal pressure) caused by temperature can let the container swell or implode, reducing the mechanical resistance of the structure.
Stack the containers as indicated in the technical sheets.
Tanks and drums hot filling
Do not stack warm tanks and drums.
Mechanical characteristics deteriorate quickly with raising temperatures.
Short-time (some hours) temperature to 80°C maximum do not deteriorate container’s mechanical characteristics. For longer periods do not exceed the temperature of 60° C.
Some chemical products could be not compatible with polyethylene above 25°C; chemical compatibility must be verified considering the filling temperature.
To avoid downfall always use good quality pallet: containers bottom must be entirely supported by the bench.
After the filling:
To avoid package collapse do not close tanks or drums before reaching a room temperature.
Movement and storage of full tanks or drums
Use pallets suitable to package size.
Avoid tanks and drums overhang out of the pallet.
Check for the presence of nails, cutting edges or debris that can damage tanks and drums.
Verify that the final user is informed about the use of instructions.
Tanks and drums with air valve caps have to stocked vertically.
Stack up only tanks and drums of the same size.
Avoid an excessive tension of the extendible film to prevent tanks and drums collapsing.
When putting film on light tanks, you can use cartons or plastic angular protections.
Verify the organoleptic properties before filling and transporting food substabstances.
Homologation and UN mark
UN (RID/ADR/IMDG) Mark certifies tanks and drums conformity to law regulations on the transportation of dangerous goods.
The unit of homologation which is mentioned in the mark (density, package, hydraulic pressure) represents the performance level of chemical products that can be assimilated to water.
Other liquids have a lower standard performance level.
For further details see UN declaration of conformity or call Bergamaschi Plastica customer service.
Hydraulic pressure value expressed in the UN mark corresponds to a 30-minute-maximum period of resistance during tank tests; do not take the hydraulic pressure value as a reference value when draining tanks and drums under pressure.
Nominal capacity has to be considered approximate.
Homologation stacking-up tests are performed using a test load: do not apply these maximum values when stacking up.
Direction from dangerous goods package regulations
Below we publish an extract from the in force law on dangerous goods package:
- users have the responsibility to guarantee the conformity of the package to the regulations on dangerous goods and its compatibility with the product it carries.
- The company has to name a consultant for dangerous goods transportation whose responsibilities are the package and its periodical check.
- In the case a container is re used to transport dangerous goods, verify its good state and capacity of exceeding all the tests provided by ADR regulation: this is valid also for the closing system (caps, lids, output taps) that can be replaced if needed.
- Among the infractions we quote:
2) the lack of declaration of conformity between the good and the package by the sender.
7) inadequate vehicle or package.
